The Canteen, located in downtown Dartmouth, feels like coming home. This east coast eatery is both welcoming and vibrant. This restaurant has a very family style dining room feel, but as if your family was at its posh beach house. The energy is upbeat and the whole dining experience is fun.
What The Canteen does well is they take well known east coast ingredients and meals and elevate them into something more sophisticated, yet familiar. They know how to take dishes we know well and transform them into what we know, only prettier and more delicious.
Their menu is inviting and will please even the most challenging palate. They use local ingredients whenever possible, and they are a great addition to the local dining scene. The Canteen is one of my favourite restaurants in Nova Scotia and every dish is sure to please!
Chef Renée Lavallée and co-owner Doug Townsend are to be commended for establishing a go-to location in downtown Dartmouth.

About our Plate Guide...
Our Plate Guide is designed to highlight the best of what our region has to offer in food and drink. Only recommended restaurants, breweries, wineries, distilleries, and eateries will make the guide. Every entry in our guide has been tested and vetted by Chef Stephen Barrett and the Seasoned Plate team to ensure quality, minimum standards, and a great eating or drinking experience.
We have travelled this region eating and drinking extensively to take the guess work out of dining out. Our recommendations are guaranteed to provide unforgettable experiences that showcase regional delights.
All restaurants will be rated on a set of criteria and given a score out of 20. These will include 10 points for food, 5 points for ambiance, and 5 points for service. In addition to a rating, the very best restaurants will be awarded up to 3 plates. Every restaurant will get a rating, but only the best will receive the prestigious plate recognition.
