As soon you step into Bar Sofia you are immediately transported to somewhere different. A place that is vibrant, energic, and bright. The space is filled with surrealist artwork by Rafael Silveira, thoughtful furniture, and aesthetically pleasing dishware. The mood is upbeat, and it has a big city feel. This is just the start of the transformation of the Halifax dining scene, and we’re all along for the ride.
Chef Anthony Walsh has eloquently showcased Nova Scotian ingredients in magnificent Latin dishes that burst with flavour. Along with his team, they have created a menu that is full of Latin flair. Dishes range from tacos and freshly carved jamon serrano to whole bream and glazed Nova Scotian lamb ribs, so diners really have the choice of sampling a range of small plates or opting for a more traditional full meal. Of the dishes we tried, the Brussel sprouts were the standout dish of the day. Crispy fried Brussel sprouts, served with herbs, thinly sliced radish, spicy house made sauce, and an aioli. They were truly incredible.
Bar Sofia also has a fun cocktail menu with lots of mezcal and tequila concoctions to choose from. They have drinks served in coconuts and pineapples, and a tap list representing great Nova Scotian craft beer. Their location is also fantastic. They are located in the Queens Marque in downtown Halifax, right by the water.
Bar Sofia is such a wonderful addition to the Halifax dining scene. It represents something completely different to what was traditionally expected from this town. It’s world-class. They have a well-designed menu, fun drinks, and delicious food. It is energetic, busy, and happening. Bar Sofia is a solid choice for a great meal, excellent drinks, and a fun night out.
