The Orient, located in Bedford, NS, is an authentic Chinese restaurant that serves both traditional and modern dishes. They can be found on the Bedford highway in a fairly nondescript part of town. Don’t let the local scenery deter you because once you step inside and put that first piece of food in your mouth everything changes.
This restaurant serves more authentic food than typical Canadian Chinese joints. Their dishes are more flavourful than one would expect, and the food is layered with complexity. The egg rolls, in particular, are some of the best I’ve ever had.
Chef Ivan, originally from Hong Kong, has taken the essence of Chinese cuisine and made it shine by using local ingredients and traditional knowhow. This restaurant is everything a Canadian Chinese restaurant should be. It has enough familiarity to appeal to the masses but takes just the right amount of calculated risks to get you to try something new. This is the benchmark for this style of cuisine in Atlantic Canada and others should strive to be as good as The Orient.
Visit this place for a gastronomic journey into the mind of Chef Ivan. It will be familiar yet exciting, comforting yet exhilarating, and you’re sure to clean your plate.
