Located at 219 Waverley Rd, Dartmouth, NS, Nine Locks Brewing is one of the largest craft breweries in the province. Since opening in 2014, in the adapted brewpub located within the walls of Your Father’s Moustache, Nine Locks has grown. They recently opened a second storefront location and tap room in Halifax and are in the process of building a new brewing facility to house their ever expanding business. They have a range of year round options but also offer seasonal and small batch beers. Our pick is their Nine Locks Cream Ale for its smooth and approachable characteristics.

Located at 3670 Kempt Road, Halifax, NS, Stillwell Brewing Co makes refined Belgian and European style beers that are sophisticated and complex. Their product is available at two of their exceptional beer bars in Halifax - Bar Stillwell and the Stillwell Freehouse. Stillwell’s conveniently offers a beer garden in the city during the summer months. This brewing company leans heavily on their seasonal and speciality beers, which are often foeder aged and fruited. They also have a European style pilsner that is more readily available throughout the province. Our pick is their Sook Grisette because it’s a lovely example of style with an approachable ABV.

The taproom itself is littered with music memorabilia, from guitars to stage lights, and from picks to a jukebox. This place is the perfect destination for the craft beer drinking music fan. As the first brewery in Stellarton, Backstage provides a place for residents and tourists alike to gather for a well crafted pint while supporting local and enjoying the spot’s musical vibe. It is a welcomed addition to the region for a quality place to spend an evening among friends. Our pick is their Night Moves Pale Ale. It is an approachable ABV that is juicy and fruity.

Located at 2623 NS-367, Pictou, NS, Uncle Leo’s Brewery is one of the Nova Scotian North Shore’s hidden gems. They proudly focus on German and British style beers and have won multiple awards for their exceptional craftsmanship. Started by couple Karl and Rebecca, the now well established brewery continues to impress locals and tourists alike. The taproom is a cosy space where customers can get growlers, takeaway cans, or enjoy a traditional ale on their outside patio space. Uncle Leo’s focuses on outstanding quality, and it is evident with every taste. Named after their Uncle Leo from Newfoundland, who had to make beer himself if he wanted to enjoy the occasional pint, the duo honours this tradition in every beer they make. Our pick is their Smoked Porter, which is smokey and bold with exceptional flavour that lingers beyond the pint itself.

Located at 88 College Street, Antigonish, NS, Candid Brewing is a loud new addition to the craft brewing industry in Nova Scotia. Everything they do is bold, from their neon retro signage to their flavourful beer lineup. Candid took over the space occupied by the former newspaper, the Antigonish Casket, as a welcomed addition to the university town. The brewery and taproom have a community hall feel where everyone is welcomed. With live events and weekly music, huge lineup of flavourful beers, retro vibes, and welcoming staff, this place has something for everyone. Their beers are vast, and range from bold DIPAs to Earl Grey infused brown ales, and everything in between. Our pick is their No Brainer Pale Ale with Blood Orange. It’s quite citricy, super refreshing, and absolutely delicious.
